What is a Limited-Edition Print & its Value
What is a Limited-Edition, Giclée Print & its Value?
Art Prints for the Home
One of the biggest questions I receive is ‘What is a limited-edition print?’ Well…I’m here today to explain what it is, how to differentiate it between mass reproductions, and why they tend to hold more value.
It took a long time for me to offer prints. I felt that if I were to make reproductions of my originals, I needed them to still hold value and to really differentiate from the quickly manufactured prints you often see in big-box stores. The process of creating limited-edition prints is actually quite tedious and labor-intensive.
I’ll try to explain the process briefly. First, one must create a high-resolution scan of the original artwork to achieve the highest quality. Then, the artist will edit the file to ensure the color correctly matches the original and all dust and blemishes are removed (this often occurs from the scanner). After the artist feels that the print file accurately depicts the artwork, many test proofs are then printed and analyzed. This entire process can take hours to several days.
A key differentiator between limited-edition prints & manufactured ones is that the limited-edition prints are signed and numbered, and once the edition has sold out, they will never be produced again. There could be hundreds to thousands of mass-produced prints out there, but if they are signed and numbered, typically there are only 20 -100 pieces that exist. For me, having a piece signed by the artist in and of itself holds more value.
Quality Over Quantity
Quality over quantity is the name of the game when it comes to creating prints in my studio. I make each print to order, so I do not have tons of prints hanging around (and risk getting damaged). I keep a robust spreadsheet documenting who collected every. single. print. and how much they spent. For me, I treat my prints equally to my original paintings, and I want my collectors to feel like they collected a real piece of artwork no matter the cost.
