My New Backyard Art Studio: Volume I
I’ve been dreaming & scheming my backyard art studio for literal years. If you’ve been following along for a while, you know this project has been way more of an ordeal than my husband and I ever anticipated. Many tears, exhausting conversations, and permitting dilemmas were involved in what we thought was a small project, but my backyard art studio is finally here.
To back up a little bit, our first meeting with our contractor and architect occurred in February 2020. Our goal was to build a small backhouse that would function as my art studio but could transition into a guest suite should we choose.
We all know what happened to the world shortly after that initial meeting, so between COVID, 1 ACL tear, getting pregnant, having a baby, and painting from the dining room table, things finally began to take place at our humble abode.

The day we brought June home from the hospital, was the exact day we broke ground (I kid you not!). Needless to say, she learned how to sleep through all noise due to the construction occurring right next to her nursery. I truly believe she frequented Home Depot more than any other newborn has and pro-tip: the lighting aisle is a great way to stimulate an upset baby!
It’s a rather small space, so utilizing every nook and cranny was essential. Storage (and hiding my mess) was a priority for me when designing the space. Between storing shipping supplies and art materials - cabinetry played a crucial role in the space. Enter the design for our custom built-ins:
Custom Office Built-Ins
When designing the custom built-ins, I knew there were a few requirements had to be met:
Closed cabinets to hide marketing and shipping supplies, and let’s face it…all of my clutter
Drawers to store my printers, electronics, and scanner
Cabinets needed to be interchangeable with an armoire should it ever be turned into a guest suite
Art light with rotating artwork in the center was an absolute must!
The Paint Color
As an artist, choosing the appropriate paint color was essential (& honestly the most stressful part of this entire process). I finally came down to a color that I couldn’t be more in love with, and I can’t wait to reveal it.
Benjamin Moore Antique Jade
Aligns with my brand coloring
Brings the outside in
It’s a chameleon color (can lean on the side of gray or blue-green depending on the time of day and lighting)
It's a calming tone

Get the Look
<< Filling the top shelving with larger, statement items was a priority for me. This budget-friendly vase makes the perfect focal point, & I’m certain its versatility will allow me to style it elsewhere if ever needed!
I store a lot of my marketing, shipping, & art supplies, so having these items hidden was pertinent for our design; however, I still wanted the display to be aesthetically pleasing inside. I found this awesome bust in Santa Fe at a vintage store, & thankfully, thanks to a little Google Search, I found the exact same figure at a fraction of the cost! >>
