New Orleans Recap

We frequent New Orleans several times a year, and its unique culture and vibrant spirit always makes for a great trip. I often get asked for a list of my favorite things to do in New Orleans that isn’t on Bourbon Street or the French Quarter (not that those areas aren’t awesome!). Below is a list of a few of my go-to places that I always recommend first-timers to this crazy, yet amazing city.

Whether you are visiting for Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, or a weekend away, I have found that these places really capture the true essence of New Orleans and have remained my favorite restaurants time and time again. Having many relatives and friends that reside there, they too agree that these are some of their top choices.

THINGS TO DO:

  • Visit the historical National WWII Museum.

  • Stroll through Audubon Park & Zoo.

  • Take a streetcar down St. Charles & see all of the beautiful homes.

  • Reserve an afternoon to go to Magazine Street to check out the fun shops and art galleries, especially Ashley Longshore’s gallery.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK:

  • Jacques-Imos: Located in Uptown New Orleans, this local restaurant usually has a wait, but it is worth every minute! If you’re wanting an authentic Louisiana experience with great cuisine, this is your place. (Pro-tip: there is a cool bar called Maple Leaf next door with live music, if you want to drop in while you wait on your table.)

  • Saffron NOLA: One of my absolute favorite, chic restaurants, Saffron combines both an Indian flare and a nod to Southern cuisine. The "Oyster Bed Roast” should not be missed!

  • Peche: This awesome restaurant works with local fishermen and farmers who harvest sustainably, and offers great sharable dishes. Go check out the antiques on Royal Street and the art galleries on Julia Street afterwards.

  • Atchafalaya: An adorable restaurant with a great Sunday jazz brunch and bloody mary bar. Who can pass that up?!

WHERE TO STAY:

  • Hotel Monteleone: This historical, timeless hotel is located in the French Quarter - so even if you choose not to stay here, you should definitely grab a cocktail at the famous Carousel Bar.

  • Hotel Peter & Paul: While it is off of the beaten path, a historic church and school and has been beautifully restored into a stunning boutique hotel. Enjoy the well-designed and adorned interior by stopping by for a speciality cocktail and coffee offered at the Elysian Bar. This was one of my favorite things I did on my most recent visit.

  • The Maison de la Luz, a 67-room boutique guest house from Atelier Ace, designed by LA-based design firm, Studio Shamshiri, is worth the hype. Be sure to stop by Bar Marilou as it is a luxurious refuge taking you back to a different era.
