5 Things to Consider When Buying Art

What to Consider When Collecting Art

What To Consider When Buying Art by CoCo Zentner

1.) One:

If you can’t stop thinking about it, then it’s probably meant to be!

  • I bought my first piece of art in my early twenties at an Estate Sale, & it is still one of my favorite pieces. It was something that immediately caught my eye and I couldn’t stop thinking about it for over a day, so I went back and purchased it. Don’t buy something only to match your couch or because it is the ‘color of the year’. I am guilty of this, so learn from my mistakes! Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t have a custom piece created specifically for that space; you just need to be absolutely in love with it and not just trying to fill a space. Art is an investment and should bring you joy for years to come!

2.) Two:

Start Small

  • If you are new to collecting artwork, get your feet wet with something reasonably priced. When you are first beginning to accumulate pieces, it’s key to build confidence in your style, and buying something in a lower price range is the perfect way to start out (and you won’t have buyer’s remorse!). If the piece is small, you can try it out in different spaces in your home or group it with your other favorite artists in a gallery wall setting.

3.) Three:

Know the background!

  • I think it is imperative to understand the significance of why a piece was created. Knowing the person or meaning behind the canvas can be just as interesting as the work itself. After some research, I learned that the artist from the Estate Sale painting actually went to the same college as me and her artwork is valued at a much higher price point compared to what I purchased it for. Also, most present-day artists have a website and social media presence that will shed a glimpse into their life and inspiration. I love to know what feeds and stimulates the souls of the artists I collect from.

4.) Four:

Invest in Original Artwork

  • While I do produce print series to reach more people at a variety of prices, original artwork depicts the artist’s journey and process. Each piece is unique – nothing else exists like that in this world. With prints, you lose some of the authenticity, the texture, and the life behind it. When you purchase artwork from galleries, shows, or online, understand that the price tag reflects the high quality of the materials and the demand for his/her work.

5.) Five:

Art if a Lifelong Purchase

  • Following the previous statement, one thing that I love about collecting art is that it is an investment that hopefully will last a lifetime. Will and I have talked about purchasing artwork to commemorate our anniversaries. We will be able to cherish each piece, to associate it to that specific year in our lives, and to tell a story for generations to come.

Until next time,
