Watercolor Painting Workshop Details

This past week, I taught 11 eager students how to create floral watercolor paintings on notecards (perfect to send to loved ones this holiday season) at House of Margot Blair, an adorable floral studio here in the heart of Austin, TX.

Each student was greeted with a beverage of choice, and then seated at their painting station with a charcuterie board made by Spread & Co. and a personal flower arrangement — a perfect atmosphere to get creative!

After showing them a brief demo, we discussed all about watercolor painting techniques (like painting wet on wet vs wet on dry), color theory, different art brushes, & mixing paint.

After practicing and putting paint on paper, we began painting on watercolor notecards. I was so impressed by each student’s work - they were all so different yet beautiful. It’s such a testimony of how we view things differently as humans, and we all have our own unique perspectives. One amazing student that recently overcame breast cancer created notecards of floral ‘boobs’ to send to her friends receiving treatment - such a beautiful idea.

Teaching others brings so much joy into my life & is the greatest reward. Painting has served as a form of therapy for me, and it truly sparks so much light and color into a world that often feels bleak.

I had an absolute blast and can’t wait for the next workshop in the Spring of 2024! If you are interested in participating in an upcoming workshop or course (both in-person and virtually), click the button below to be informed of upcoming events and courses that I have planned!

Watercolor Painting Supplies

  • Paper - we used a lot of scratch paper to warm up, and this paper is always a great option for the final masterpiece!

  • Paints - these are my favorite go-to watercolor paints for beginners and intermediates

  • Paintbrushes - these are hands-down my favorite watercolor paintbrushes that I use on a daily basis!

  • Water canisters for painting - we had a few students accidentally drink out of these - so be sure to specify what is for brushes if teaching!)

  • Palettes - I absolutely love these palettes with lids - they are so easy to transport if you set them up prior to the event.

  • Watercolor Notecards - I love the quality of these cards and how they hold paint. Another bonus: they come with envelopes ready to send to loved ones!
