How To: Make Small Spaces Feel BIG

How to Make Small Spaces Feel Big

1.) Furniture:

  • ‘Less is more’ could not be a truer statement if you’re looking to make your small space feel big. Bulky objects, especially, will make the room feel more cluttered. Strive to pick pieces that have legs, versus skirts - this will make the room feel significantly more airy.

  • I love lucite & glass furniture in small rooms because it feels like they take up less visual space. We opted for a lucite and glass coffee table from Anthropologie and a large clear dining room table in our dining area, which has made a tremendous impact on our open-air living and dining area.

2.) Accessories:

  • Curtains: my mom taught me a rule of thumb early in my life that I still live by. Hang your curtain rods close to the ceiling & wider than the windows to make the ceiling appear to be higher, and the windows appear to be larger. This is a must!

  • Mirrors: the more mirrors, the better! This helps light bounce throughout the room, and the reflections create optical illusions as well.

  • Bookshelves: consider having bookshelves (and cabinets) that go up to the ceiling to give off the appearance of a higher ceiling! I also opt for these as it is fewer areas to dust.

  • Artwork: larger artwork can make a room feel more grand and expensive. So go for something loud and bold to really make a room feel exquisite!

3.) Perfect Paint:

  • Dark colors can make a space feel SO small. The very first thing we did when we moved into our little home was to remove the brown kitchen cabinets. Our kitchen felt so claustrophobic, and it was all due to the color! We immediately moved the cabinets to the utility room and built custom cabinets to the ceiling (I hate dust that collects on top of cabinets more than anything and this helped maximize our storage space), and painted the cabinets with Chantilly Lace Paint by Benjamin Moore. This color is MAGIC and will make any small space feel BIG (disregard the cell phone pictures and lack of cabinet pulls)!
