A Cherished Oil Painting
I started this Japanese Magnolia oil painting a week before I found out I was pregnant. Reflecting on the entire process of creating this piece (and baby!) is making me a bit emotional now as I add the final touches & near the end of my pregnancy. I wish I could keep this sentimental piece for myself & the nursery, as I grew so much as a person over the span of this year.
I’ve called this Japanese Magnolia painting a chameleon. Depending on the time of day, its colors completely range. I worked on this piece throughout all different types of light to ensure I loved the colors in any scenario.
What Inspired this Piece:
This 30” x 40” oil painting was commissioned by a lovely client of mine located in Colorado. She grew up in the same city as me, sharing an affinity for these recognizable blooms in any southern town. I only take a handful of commissions each year, and because this piece was right up my alley, I was elated to take this painting head-on!
However, after finding out I was pregnant right as I began this painting, I was extremely nervous and cautious to use oil paints (specifically cadmium reds dues to their toxicity). While I have changed many of my products in my studio to healthier options (like this brand of mineral spirits), my doctor felt using a respirator would be the safest route to take when painting with oils.
