How To: Update Your Space with Little Spending
Update Your Space With A Small Budget
If you know me, you probably know that I am embarrassingly a coupon queen. Don’t be mistaken, I’m not on the level of the TV show Extreme Couponing, but I will do (mostly) anything to find the most inexpensive outlet to spending money on unnecessary things. After buying our first home, and facing the many purchases than I had not anticipated, I began to realize that there are many ways to cut around the corners and save a few pennies.
1.) Fresh Coat of Paint:
My mom taught me this life hack many years ago. Before getting rid of something, give it a fresh coat of paint. I found an antique mirror in my grandmother’s attic that I absolutely loved, but it was puke green. It had so much potential, but I was honestly terrified to do anything to it. However, I realized that attempting to paint it would be better than being puke green or covered in dust. It is now one of my favorite pieces in our house and cost me about $5 to update. Spray paint has become our best friend in this household! Add some to your outdoor furniture before the summer heat and it’ll look good as new!
*Note: You do not need to be an artist to master the art of adding an additional coat of paint to anything, so don’t be shy!
2.) Hardware Update:
I had an old dingy dresser that followed me after college. I really wanted to toss it to the streets, but then an idea dawned on me while pursuing through Anthropologie one day. Why not update the knobs? This quick fix changed the entire piece, and I am so thrilled I didn’t get rid of it. If you live in an apartment or old building, you can do this to cabinets as well.
3.) Changing the Legs:
Changing the legs or feet to a chair can make a huge difference, and many chairs have legs that are removable – they are usually screwed or bolted to the frame. *Pro tip: try to pick a replacement that seems to be the same width or just as sturdy as the originals.
4.) Rearrange:
This may seem like a complete no-brainer, but rearranging your furniture can be a quick & easy (and no expense) solution that is exactly what your space needed. If you don’t want to move your couch or dining room table, readjust your coffee table accessories and bookshelves. Even if you’re not adding anything new to the room, moving things may add a little more delight to objects that were previously overlooked.
Hopefully these tips will help refresh your space before the hot summer days get here!
Until next time,
